Cafe Diem is one of the most flexible coffee spots in Ames. It’s spacious, it’s open late, it has a real food menu, and it caters to just about every type of visitor, from college students cramming in groups to families out for brunch. It might not be the place I’d send a serious coffee snob, but as an all purpose downtown café, it’s tough to beat.

The vibe
The atmosphere at Cafe Diem is comfortable and inviting. Dim lighting, comfy seats, and a wide range of music create a relaxed setting that works for nearly any crowd — I noticed a real mix of ages, from college students to older locals, with a constant flow of people coming and going. It strikes a nice balance: lively enough to feel social, but not so loud you can’t have a conversation or get work done.
The coffee and food
This is where Cafe Diem stands out from most coffee shops. The food menu goes well beyond standard café fare: smoothies, real meals, a solid breakfast selection. One small heads up: breakfast service ends at 11am, which is a bit early if you’re a late riser. Prices lean slightly on the expensive side, but not unreasonable for what you get.

The lunch menu covers sandwiches and salads in the $10 to $12 range (the black bean burger, grilled chicken panini, and chunky chicken salad are all standouts), and there’s a packed case of grab-and-go pastries, fruit cups, yogurt, and drinks for a quicker visit.

On the coffee side, I always order an iced vanilla latte at every Ames cafe and rank them against each other. Cafe Diem’s came in at a 5/10 for me noticeably on the bitter side.

With that said, the seasonal cold brews and specialty matchas get strong praise from regulars, so they might be where Cafe Diem’s drink menu actually shines. For everything else around it (the food, the space, the vibe) the trade off is fair.
Seating and practicality
Cafe Diem is built for groups. There’s plenty of indoor seating that makes it a great spot for group study sessions or socializing, plus a smaller outdoor area that fills up fast on nice days. Wifi is free and the bathrooms are clean.
One thing to watch for if you’re planning a longer work session: charging outlets are rare. If you need to plug in, grab a seat near a wall and check first. Combined with the spacious layout, this is more of a “bring your friends and stay a while” spot than a heads down solo work café.
For parking, there are meters on Main Street, but there’s also a free parking lot in the back, a real perk for a downtown spot.
Bottom line at Cafe Diem
Cafe Diem is the best Ames coffee shop for groups, whether that’s friends studying, a family brunch, or just a comfortable place to socialize over coffee. The flexible hours, real food menu, and roomy layout make it a daily-driver kind of café. Just don’t come for the espresso, come for everything else around it.
