La Tosca Ames: Eclectic Vibes, Strong Coffee, and a Dinner Crowd

La Tosca is one of the more distinctive spots in Ames. Sitting on Welch Ave in Campustown, it manages to pull off something tricky: it works as a morning coffee shop, a lunch spot, a dinner restaurant, and a cocktail bar, all in the same space. The vibe leans classical and a little fancy, with dim lighting, original art on the walls, and one of the prettiest outdoor patios in town. After visiting, I came away with a clear take: Tosca is at its best when you treat it as a sit down experience with a friend, not a quick coffee stop or a work session.

The vibe

Tosca feels intentional in a way most Ames coffee shops don’t. The ceiling is painted dark, the floors are warm hardwood, and the walls are covered in original paintings, stained glass, and that gorgeous monkey jungle wallpaper behind the counter. Lighting is dim and warm, the music plays at a dining room volume rather than a study cafe volume, and the whole place feels more like a small bistro than a typical coffee shop. It’s the kind of space that rewards slowing down.

The coffee and food

Tosca serves Counter Culture Coffee, which is a real credential. Counter Culture is one of the most respected specialty roasters in the country, out of Durham, North Carolina, and a shop choosing them signals they take espresso seriously. My iced vanilla latte at Tosca was one of the best I’ve had in Ames. Smooth, balanced, and noticeably better than most spots in town. If you order a single thing here, make it the coffee.

The food menu is where I’d offer a heads up. I had bacon and eggs from the breakfast menu and the portions were small, definitely not a “fill you up before a long day” plate. The food is well crafted and the flavors are good, this isn’t a knock on quality, but if you’re hungry, plan to order more than you think or come at lunch or dinner when the portions tend to be larger. Reviewers consistently praise the fries and sauce, which is a useful tip if you swing through later in the day.

The shop runs in three meal blocks: breakfast 8am to 11am, lunch 11am to 4pm, and dinner 4pm to close, with a bar program and full cocktail menu in the evenings. That bar setup is a real point of difference, most Ames coffee shops don’t transition into a place you’d want to grab a drink at night, but Tosca pulls it off because the space was built for it.

Seating and practicality

Seating at La Tosca is plentiful but specific. The indoor space has a mix of small two-tops, a lounge area with leather chairs and art, and a couple of cozy corners. The catch: tables are small and not really sized for spreading out a laptop and food at the same time. This is not a work café. Outlets are rare, the music is louder than ideal for focusing, and the whole atmosphere is pointed at conversation, not productivity.

That said, the outdoor patio is one of the most appealing in Ames, large, canopied, and surrounded by greenery, with plenty of mesh tables and chairs. On a nice day it’s hard to beat.

Wifi is free with a password. Parking is metered on Welch Ave, no free lot. Service is friendly and consistent in my experience, though a few reviewers have flagged that pacing can slow down at peak hours when the place is full.

Bottom line

La Tosca is the best Ames coffee shop for a real sit down experience. The coffee is genuinely top tier (those Counter Culture beans show up in the cup), the space is beautiful, and the dinner and cocktails option makes it one of the few spots in town that works for both a morning latte and an evening drink. Just don’t come expecting a giant breakfast or a heads-down work session, that’s not what Tosca is built for. Come for the vibe, the coffee, and a slow meal with someone you actually want to talk to.
