The Dot Cafe Ames is the kind of spot that feels like a complete reset from the typical college town coffee shop. Tucked into a quiet corner of west Ames at 127 Dotson Drive, this women owned cafe leans into vintage charm with salt and pepper shakers on every table, floral mugs lining the shelves, and a pink Adirondack bench out front that practically begs to be photographed. It also happens to serve what might be the best iced vanilla latte I have tried in Ames so far.
The vibe at The Dot Cafe Ames
The Dot opened in October 2024 in the former Daytime Diner building, and owner Dawn Budd brought a strong design sensibility with her. She is a graphic designer by trade, and you can tell. Everything inside has been curated rather than just assembled: pastel pink accent walls, deep teal booth seating, an antique carved wooden chair posted up like a throne in the middle of the dining room, and shelves stacked with vintage tea cups, ceramic figurines, and Morning Bell coffee beans for sale.
The aesthetic is vintage without feeling kitschy. It is comfortable, warm, and lived-in, which fits the philosophy Budd shared with the Iowa State Daily when she opened: she wanted a welcoming spot focused on comfort, acceptance, and good food.
The coffee and food
The Dot Cafe Ames uses espresso from Morning Bell Coffee Roasters, which is already one of my favorite roasters in town, and the iced vanilla latte was excellent. Smooth, balanced, vanilla forward without being syrupy sweet, and noticeably better than most of the iced vanilla lattes I have benchmarked across Ames. I gave it an 8 out of 10, which is the highest score I have logged on this site so far.
Beyond coffee, The Dot is a serious breakfast and brunch spot. The menu changes seasonally and accommodates a wide range of dietary needs, including gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, dairy free, and nut free options. Portions are generous and the prices are reasonable for the quality. The Dot also partners with Little Woods Herbal Teas out of downtown Ames and Renn’s Syrups from Nevada, Iowa, so the drink menu has a lot of range beyond standard espresso drinks.
Seating and practicality
The Dot is a comfortable place to sit and stay for a while. The dining room is well lit, the mix of booths and tables gives you options for solo work or group hangs, and there is patio seating outside when the weather cooperates. Wifi is free, parking is free, and the staff is genuinely friendly without being performative.
The one heads up for students: outlets are limited. If you are coming to plug in a laptop and grind through a study session, plan ahead or scope out a seat near a wall. The Dot is more of a brunch and linger spot than a heads-down work cafe.
Bottom line on The Dot Cafe Ames
The Dot Cafe Ames is one of the easiest recommendations I can make in this city. The coffee is excellent, the food is thoughtful, the space is beautiful, and the whole experience feels intentional in a way that most cafes in college towns are not. The one thing to know going in is the schedule: The Dot is closed Monday and Tuesday, so it works best as a weekend brunch or midweek treat rather than a daily routine.
