Cafe Milo is the kind of place you go when you actually want to find a seat. The dining room stretches further than you expect, the brick fireplace gives the whole space a neighborhood coffeehouse warmth, and on most afternoons you can grab a quiet table without much trouble. It is one of the rare Ames cafes where seating is not the limiting factor.
The vibe at Cafe Milo
Cafe Milo sits at the Ames Fitness Center on Mortensen Road, but it operates as its own independent business. The fitness center is next door, not part of the cafe. Inside, the space leans into a relaxed industrial look: high ceilings, exposed black ductwork, brick accent walls, and a centerpiece fireplace with an “Espresso” sign that warms the back half of the dining room. Two vintage tufted chairs flank the fireplace, and a deep red leather couch wraps the front for low key lounging. It is comfortable without trying too hard.
The crowd is a mix of remote workers on laptops, ISU students grinding through study sessions, and locals stopping in for a quick lunch. It is quiet enough that you can actually focus on what you came to do.
The coffee and food
Cafe Milo brews locally roasted coffee and runs a full espresso menu, plus teas, smoothies, Italian sodas, and a “build your own infusion” chalkboard that lets you customize Italian sodas, dirty sodas, and Red Bull drinks. There is also a full kitchen serving sandwiches, soups, salads, and a bakery case stocked with cinnamon rolls, scones, muffins, and cookies. It functions more like a full service cafe than a coffee bar only shop.
I ordered an iced vanilla latte and gave it a 6 out of 10 on my benchmark. The espresso shot was strong, leaning into a darker roast profile that pushed through the milk, but the vanilla was light enough that the drink read more like a regular iced latte with a hint of sweetness. If you like your espresso assertive and your sweetness restrained, this is the right cup for you. If you want a more balanced vanilla-forward latte, dial up the vanilla pumps when you order, or head over to Morning Bell Coffee Roasters where the vanilla is integrated more evenly into the drink.
The mason jar presentation is a nice touch, and the portion is generous.
Seating and practicality
This is where Cafe Milo shines for students and remote workers. The dining room is one of the most spacious in Ames. You will find standard tables, lounge seating near the fireplace, communal tables for groups, and quieter corners for solo work. Outlets are reasonably available, and the natural light through the front windows is great during the day.
One heads up on the wifi: it is password protected rather than open, so you will need to ask at the counter for the code. Not a big deal, but worth knowing if you are planning to settle in for a few hours.
Bottom line on Cafe Milo
Cafe Milo is a solid pick for a quieter, less student saturated cafe experience in west Ames. The coffee is competent without being remarkable, the food menu is broad, the seating is genuinely abundant, and the space is comfortable enough that you can settle in for a few hours of work. If you are looking for the best iced vanilla latte in town, this is not it. If you are looking for a calm spot to actually get something done, Cafe Milo earns its place.
